Maximum Height Indicators are made up of a water sensitive tape inside
a shower proof housing. They are used to measure
the peak water level reached at any one point along a waterway.
This data will give the peak flood profile down a river, and
when used with an automatic water level is very useful in flood modeling.
Staff gauge readings were mainly used before efficient time series water
level recorders were available. Staff gauges were
installed and leveled in along a river system, then local land-holders
would read the water level during an event. These are
slowly being replaced by automatic recording systems.
This data is archived at MHL and is available for purchase.
