Barometric Pressure Data Collection Program

MHL records barometric pressure at 8 locations along the New South Wales coast, Tweed Heads, Yamba, Port Macquarie, Newcastle, Sydney, Jervis Bay, Tuross Heads and Eden.

Barometric Pressure Site Locations

The instrument data is sampled every 15 minutes and telemetered to MHL twice each day at 06:00 and 17:00 Hrs Australian Eastern Standard Time. The readings are accurate to typically ±0.2 HPa and are corrected for station altitude.

This data is recorded to allow the correction of water level data recorded by pressure transducers in fully submerged instruments, these must record the combined effect of the head of water (wanted data) and atmospheric pressure (inducing an error of about 1cm of water per 1 Hpa change in barometric pressure). The pressure data is later corrected to recover the water level readings.

This is a plot of the latest available barometric data.
