Jimmys Beach Management Plan Review

Community Access Site

Jimmys Beach is located on the northern foreshore of Port Stephens to the east of the Myall River entrance.

Following repeated incidents of foreshore erosion and emergency management works to protect the beach front roads and the adjacent development, extensive investigations were completed in the 1980s by the NSW Department of Public Works (PWD) to identify the cause and extent of the problem.  On the basis of these analyses, Great Lakes Council (GLC) adopted a management strategy of recurrent beach nourishment.  This strategy aimed to address both the risk of erosion to development and the beach amenity.  Over the past decade it has become clear that the sand nourishment requirements are in excess of the initial volumes predicted by the investigations, making the continued management of the beach by this approach prohibitively expensive.

The Great Lakes Council Technical Subcommittee was established in 1999 by GLC for the purpose of  reviewing the existing Management Plan for the beach in accordance with the procedures outlined in the NSW Government Coastline Management Manual (1990) and the NSW Coastal Policy (1997).  As part of this management process GLC has commissioned the NSW Department of Public Works and Services' Manly Hydraulics Laboratory (MHL) to undertake a review of the Jimmys Beach Management Strategy. This review is being jointly funded by GLC and the Department of Environment and Climate Change.

This community access site has been developed to provide the community with information about the investigations and review, including upcoming public meetings, community consultation activities, as well as providing a forum for public input and comment on the study.
